Illustrated study guide: IELTS Two-Part Question Essays: How to Answer Both Parts

The short answer

Two-part questions need a clear answer to each question, usually in separate body paragraphs, with nothing left unanswered.

Spotting the two direct questions

Two-part questions often appear as two separate sentences ending in question marks, such as “Why has this happened? What can be done about it?”. They can also be phrased less obviously, so read carefully for two distinct things being asked.

It is worth writing both questions down before planning, in your own words, so you are certain exactly what each one requires before you begin drafting.

One body paragraph per question

The clearest way to answer a two-part question is to dedicate one full body paragraph to each question, rather than mixing the two together. This makes it easy for the examiner to see that both parts have been addressed.

Each paragraph should open with a sentence that directly answers its question, followed by explanation and an example to support it.

  • Answer question one directly in paragraph one
  • Answer question two directly in paragraph two
  • Support each answer with one clear example or reason

Staying relevant to both parts

It is easy to drift into general comments about the topic without actually answering either question. Before finishing each paragraph, check that it would make sense as a direct answer if someone asked you the question aloud.

If a paragraph could apply to almost any topic, it is probably too general and needs a more specific, question-focused answer.

A worked example

Consider the question: “Why do some people choose to work from home? What are the disadvantages of this?”

Sample paragraph answering part two

One significant disadvantage of working from home is the risk of professional isolation. Without regular face-to-face contact with colleagues, employees can miss out on informal knowledge-sharing and may find it harder to build the relationships needed for career progression.

A quick checklist

Before submitting, check that both questions have a clear, direct answer somewhere in your essay, that each answer is supported with an example, and that your conclusion briefly reflects both parts rather than only one.

  • Both questions answered directly, not just implied
  • Each answer supported with a reason or example
  • Conclusion reflects both parts of the question
