Band 7 extract

Look at how the overview comes before the details.

Band 7 report (extract)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of household spending allocated to four categories in a city. Overall, transport accounted for by far the largest share of the budget, whereas education represented the smallest. Transport made up 42% of total spending, which was 14 percentage points more than leisure, at 28%. Work-related costs comprised just under a fifth (18%), while education took only 12%, less than a third of the figure for transport.

Why it scores Band 7

The examiner would note these strengths and limits.

  • Task Achievement: clear overview, key features well selected
  • Coherence: logical order from largest to smallest
  • Lexical: varied (accounted for, made up, comprised)
  • To reach Band 8: slightly more sophisticated grouping and fully flexible comparison language
